Liposuction: Areas of the Body

Liposuction operates using very small tubes (or "cannulas") to suction fat. The small size of these cannulas and recent technological advances have made it possible for surgeons to have extremely fine control during surgery. This makes liposuction is incredibly diverse and adaptable; it can be used in a variety of areas over the body. The most common areas for liposuction in women are the abdomen, breasts, hips, and thighs. In men, two common target areas are the abdomen and the jawline. Men also find that liposuction can be an ideal way to remove or reduce embarrassing "love handles" (fat deposits on the flank) and "man boobs" (buildup of fat in the male breast). However, there are a host of areas that liposuction can target and improve.

Abdomen, Flanks and Waist

The abdomen is the most popular place for liposuction. Practically everybody has a little belly fat that they'd like to lose! Liposuction can be very successful at removing fat buildups in the stomach area. Liposuction is much less invasive and dangerous than the "tummy tuck," which removes abdominal skin in addition to fat. Tummy tucks, in addition to being more dangerous and invasive during surgery, can lead to complications such as blood clots in the lungs. Many people mistakenly believe that a tummy tuck is necessary to restore a woman's figure after pregnancy. However, this is not true. In nearly all cases, liposuction alone produces very satisfying results without the danger and increased cost of a tummy tuck. Liposuction can help both women and men to have trimmer, more toned-looking midsections.

Face and Neck

Some people, both men and women, have a genetic disposition to store excess fat around the face. If this fat builds up on the neck, it can create the appearance of a "double chin." If it builds up on the lower cheeks, it creates prominent "jowls." Fat can also build up on the upper cheeks. In any of these places, fat build-ups make a person look older and less fit. Liposuction can help manage large amounts of facial fat and improve the aesthetic appeal of your most attractive feature: your face. Liposuction of the face and neck is popular in both men and women.

Female Breasts

Some women wish that their breasts were smaller, for either health-based or aesthetic reasons. In some women, excessively large breasts can lead to chronic pain in the neck, back and shoulders. Excessively large breasts can also interfere with activity and be a cause of social embarrassment. Liposuction can help eliminate that pain and awkwardness. Liposuction can remove as much or as little breast tissue as desired, up to about half of the original breast size. As an added bonus, after a liposuction breast reduction, many women find that their breasts lift naturally, due to the decreased weight, giving them a younger look.

Male Breasts

Liposuction can also be extremely helpful at removing excess fat deposits in the male breast. Some studies suggest that forty to fifty percent of all men experience unwanted breast swelling and growth. It's no wonder than, that this surgery is one of the most popular places for male liposuction. Many men who have the surgery performed find that it improves their appearance and helps them feel more confident.

Thighs and Hips

In some people, especially women, large amounts of fat are stored on the thighs and around the hips. This fat is often hard to eliminate through dieting or exercise. The thighs store fat in three main areas: in the front, in the back and on the outside. Liposuction can target all of these areas as well as fat deposits on the hips to help achieve in an attractive, symmetrical appearance. Liposuction of the thigh and hip helps many people to have more proportionate, attractive and athletic-looking bodies. The thigh is also an area where many women experience problems with cellulite. Traditionally, liposuction has had problems removing cellulite, however some of the new techniques have proven very effective. Check out our liposuction techniques comparison page for more details.

Arms

Liposuction of the arm is most commonly done on women. Many women feel uncomfortable wearing short-sleeved or sleeveless clothing because of excessive arm fat. Liposuction can be incredibly effective at rectifying this problem and restoring youthful, trim-looking arms. Liposuction of the arms has one of the highest patient satisfaction ratios of any type of liposuction.

Back

A large number of women find that their backs have more fat than they wish. Sometimes this fat is located around the shoulders, causing uncomfortable and occasionally unsightly fat bulges around the bra line. Sometimes it is located higher, around the neck. Sometimes it occurs lower down, around the mid-back or in the lumbar area. These deposits can be targeted and removed with liposuction, creating a smoother figure that will look great in or out of a swimsuit.

Buttocks

Overly large and fatty buttocks can be embarrassing and can also make it difficult to go clothes shopping! Women typically to store more fat in their buttocks than men, so liposuction of the buttocks is more among women than among men. However, this procedure can be performed on members of both sexes. During liposuction of the buttocks, the surgeon removes just the right amount of excess fat to achieve proportionate, trim and healthy looking buttocks.

Other areas

Liposuction can target an extremely wide range of areas. In addition to the major areas listed above, it can successfully remove fat from the knees, ankles, legs, mons pubis and a host of other body areas. Because of its diversity, liposuction can target the areas you need. Where would you like to be trimmer, younger and more attractive?
