Liposuction has evolved into being one of the safest cosmetic procedures performed today. Modern Liposuction was developed French Surgeon, Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz, who first presented the procedure in 1982. The "Illouz Method" featured a technique of suction-assisted Lipolysis (transformation of fat into liquid). Fluid was infused into tissues using blunt cannulas and high-vacuum suction. Dr. Illouz demonstrated good and reproducible results and low morbidity. During the 1980s, many U.S. surgeons experimented with Liposuction, developing some variations, and achieving mixed results. In 1985 Dr Jeffrey Klein, a California Dermatologist, invented the tumescent technique for Liposuction, revolutionizing Liposuction surgery.
The basic surgical challenges of any Liposuction procedure are:
Removal of the right amount of fat.
Minimal disturbance of neighboring tissue, such as blood vessels and connective tissue.
Maintenance of the patient’s proper fluid balance.
Causing the least amount of discomfort to the patient.
As techniques have been refined, many ideas emerged that brought Liposuction closer to being safe, easy, painless, and successful.
